The origin of the cat is Maine in North –America. There is a lot of myths connected with The Maine Coon cat. One legend says that it is a mix of domestic cat and racoon. This can not be true because it is genetic impossible. The origin is probably a mix between several different types of longhair cats brought home by sailors. We can guess that it could be Angora Cats and Norwegian Forest cats, but we don`t know for sure. The first registration was in 1861. It was a black and white cat called ”Captain Jenks of the Horse Marines”. Maine Coons were popular show cats already more than hundred years ago. A brown tabby female called ”Cozie” won Best in Show in 1895 at Madison Square Garden Show. In the beginning of the 1920 `s the Maine Coons disappeared from the shows. The Persian cats and other exotic cats arrived in America and became more interesting. In 1959 the Maine Coons were said to be extinct., and in 1973 a newspaper wrote that the Maine Coon cat did not exist. But it existed, and in 1968 the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association was founded. The Maine Coon is the official Maine State Cat.
